Olivia Cornfield:
Hello. My name is Olivia Cornfield, and I’m a Research Associate at WestEd. This video is an introduction to the Holocaust and Genocide Education Study in California.
In October 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom formed the California Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education. The Council was formed to raise awareness of and to promote implementation of Holocaust and genocide education throughout the state of California. As part of this work, the council initiated a study to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how Holocaust and genocide topics are taught across the state, in order to provide recommendations for resources and support.
We’re eager to hear from each local education agency, or LEA, in the state, and ask you to complete a survey that will gather critical information from the field about Holocaust and genocide education. With your insights, we’ll have valuable input for supporting Holocaust and genocide education that’s taught in interdisciplinary and age-appropriate ways, and supports the next generation in being empathetic, morally courageous, and socially responsible.
We need you! Your participation in this LEA survey is critical for the Council to have an accurate view of Holocaust and genocide education in the state. Participating in this survey is an important opportunity to have your voice and needs heard and will help contribute to the improvement of Holocaust and genocide curricula for all students.
